Filter Coffee and Morning Talk
The
strong smell of filter coffee and the sweet scent of fresh jasmine always meant
one thing: the weekend was finally here. Hari, Anand, and Lakshmi were sitting
at their favorite spot, Balaji Tiffin Centre. Hari, who was always the
loudest, was scrolling very fast on his phone while holding a crispy vada.
"I swear, I lost four months of my savings in just two days," he
complained, putting his phone down hard. Anand, who was always calm, slowly
dipped his idli in sambar. "Morning, Hari. Did you remember to say 'good
morning' to your mother, or did you check your losses first?" he joked.
Lakshmi gently passed a napkin to Hari. "What happened this time, pa? Did
that Bitcoin promise you a trip to Dubai and then disappear?" Hari sighed,
looking very sad. He explained that a stock he trusted suddenly went down.
Instead of just waiting, he quickly put in more money, thinking the market was
trying to beat him, and he needed to win back the money instantly. "I had
to show that stock who was boss! So, I bought double, and it just kept sinking.
Now I've lost about seventy thousand rupees. It was like taking revenge on the
market, Lakshmi."
The Old Man's
Simple Talk
Anand
stopped chewing. "Ah, revenge trading. You tried to win back the money you
lost, right? Like running after a kid who stole your cricket ball, but you
forgot to check if the kid now has a whole gang helping him." Hari
chuckled, even though he was upset. "Exactly! I felt tricked, Anand. It
was about my pride." Lakshmi, who understood people well from her HR job,
leaned closer. "Hari, the market doesn't have feelings. It's not a person
you need to fight. That rage, that thought of 'I must get it back right now,'
that's what spoiled your plan. My father always says, 'If the rasam is too hot,
you don't drink it faster; you let it cool down.' You needed time to cool your
head and see clearly." Just then, an old man selling small clay toys, whom
they all called Thatha, walked past their table. He heard their talk. He
smiled, his eyes shining. "Trading, is it? It is like buying a beautiful pattu
saree. You don't rush and buy the first one just because you are angry that you
missed the last sale. You take a breath, you check the cloth, you wait for the
correct price, my dear."
A Clear Head
Over Cold Soda
They
moved on to easier topics—the new movie coming out and the hot weather. But the
lesson stayed with Hari. Later, as they walked towards the main road, Hari
bought two cold lemon sodas and gave one to Anand. "You know, Thatha was
right. I didn't see it as a plan; I saw it as a battle." He took a long,
cool sip of the soda. "I was trading with my anger, not with my
brain." Anand patted him on the shoulder, his expression warm. "The
beautiful thing about the market, and life, is that there is always another
chance. The money is gone for now, but the lesson is here to stay. Next time,
when you feel that anger rising, put your phone away, eat a plate of my
mother's upma, and come talk to us instead. Don't look for revenge; look for
clear answers." Lakshmi smiled and held Hari's arm. The sun was getting
hotter, but that simple, honest moment they shared felt like a cool, gentle
breeze. They walked on, three friends, ready to handle the world—and maybe next
week's market—with more patience and less anger.
