Too Much Noise, Too Few Trades
Anya walked into Rohan's apartment, covering her ears right away. "Seriously, Rohan? Are you trying to talk to aliens? Please turn that loud music down!"
Rohan, still looking at his laptop, didn't move. "I'm setting the perfect mood! Plus, I'm trying to figure out this stock market thing, and my brain needs super loud music." He pointed quickly at the screen. "Look, I bought this tiny internet coin last week, and the price just jumped up 30%—I’m a money genius!"
Anya looked at his screen and pointed to a small column he usually ignored. "Hold on, genius. Look at your volume number. It says '42.' Forty-two trades all day. That’s not a real price jump; that's probably your Uncle Gary accidentally hitting 'buy' four times while trying to find the settings."
The Big Sale at the Mall
"Volume, volume, volume," Rohan sighed, tapping the screen again. "I just don't get why it matters. If the price is high, it's a good deal, right?"
"Not quite," Anya corrected, sitting down. "The price is the 'what'—what actually happened. Volume is the 'how many'—how many people actually cared enough to take part. It's the strength behind the move. Think about a big sale at the mall. They drop the price of a fancy jacket by half—that's your price change, the 'what.' Now, there are two ways this goes down."
"If the store is empty, and only two people buy a jacket all day, that’s low volume. The price changed, but the crowd wasn't interested, so the store might put the price back up tomorrow. But if the price drops, and people rush the store, knocking over display racks to grab a jacket—that's high volume. That price drop is real because lots of people (even the big, serious buyers) are agreeing with their wallets. High volume means the price move is confirmed by lots of actual trading."
The Market is Shouting (or whispering)
Rohan finally turned the music off, his eyes wide with understanding. "Wait, so if I see the price of a stock drop 10%, but the volume is huge, it means I should probably get nervous because everyone else thinks it's going to fail?"
"You got the idea," Anya laughed. "High volume when the price goes down means lots of people are selling in a hurry. We call that strong selling pressure. And the opposite is true: High volume when the price goes up means lots of people are buying, which is strong buying pressure. It’s the difference between the market whispering an idea and the market shouting its opinion."
"Aha! So that little 'Vol' number tells me if the market is serious!" Rohan exclaimed, checking his phone again. "Wait, my pizza delivery guy is here. Maybe I can use his volume as a clue. If he shouts about my toppings, that's high conviction, right?"
"Just stick to the numbers on the screen, Rohan," Anya smiled. "But the main lesson is easy: Price tells you the direction; Volume tells you the power. Never trust a price change that doesn't have the trading volume to back it up!"
